Andrés Rafael dreamed of having a Westie puppy he could call “Poki,” named after his love for Pokémon. Little did he know, his wish would soon become a reality.
Purebred Breeders, a network of responsible breeders, and the Make-A-Wish Puerto Rico chapter teamed up to grant Andrés’ wish. The Make-A-Wish Foundation is a worldwide organization that grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition.
On Thursday, December 4, 2014 Andrés and his family met Make-A-Wish representatives at a local PetSmart for a puppy food orientation to learn about proper canine care.
Instead, he was attending his surprise Wish Granting Ceremony, where he would meet his new puppy Poki, for the very first time.
“When Andrés called his name, Poki came running to him. It was great to see the puppy already responding to the name he picked,” said Ilia Ortiz, Program Manager for Make-A-Wish Puerto Rico.
Purebred Breeders donated Poki from one of our Westie breeders to the Make-A-Wish foundation to help assist in granting Andrés’ wish. PetSmart donated a year of pet insurance for the family, along with one year of grooming, training classes and a one year supply of food.
“It’s a huge honor for us to have the opportunity to work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation,” said Andrew Green, Purebred Breeders spokesperson.
“Our overall goal is to provide a lifetime of happiness and companionship to our families. Andrés and Poki are starting a wonderful journey together and we’re thrilled we were able to be a part of this exciting time.”
